Numerals in German (Zahlwörter)

Definition:
Numerals (Zahlwörter) are words used to express numbers or quantities. In German, numerals can be classified into several categories, including cardinal numbers, ordinal numbers, fractional numbers, and multiplicative numbers.

Examples:

• Ich habe drei Äpfel. (I have three apples.)
• Er ist zwanzig Jahre alt. (He is twenty years old.)
• Die Zahl 100 ist hundert. (The number 100 is one hundred.)

2. Ordinal Numbers (Ordnungszahlen)
   These numerals are used to express the position or order of something. Ordinal numbers are used for ranking, indicating sequence, and often end in -te or -ste.
• 1st – erste
• 2nd – zweite
• 3rd – dritte
• 4th – vierte
• 5th – fünfte
• 6th – sechste
• 10th – zehnte
• 11th – elfte
• 20th – zwanzigste
• 100th – hundertste
• 1,000th – tausendste

Examples:

• Ich bin der erste in der Reihe. (I am the first in line.)
• Sie kommt als dritte Person. (She comes as the third person.)
• Das ist der zehnte Versuch. (This is the tenth attempt.)

Note: When ordinal numbers are used with nouns, they are declined (they change based on case, gender, and number).

• Die erste Frage. (The first question.)
• Der zweite Tag. (The second day.)

3. Fractional Numbers (Bruchzahlen)
   These numerals express fractions or parts of a whole.
• 1/2 – einhalb
• 1/3 – ein Drittel
• 1/4 – ein Viertel
• 1/5 – ein Fünftel
• 1/10 – ein Zehntel
• 3/4 – drei Viertel
• 2/3 – zwei Drittel

Examples:

• Ich habe ein Drittel des Kuchens gegessen. (I ate one-third of the cake.)
• Ein Viertel der Teilnehmer ist schon gegangen. (A quarter of the participants has already left.)
• Sie trinkt zwei Drittel des Wassers. (She drinks two-thirds of the water.)

4. Multiplicative Numbers (Vielfache Zahlen)
   These numerals express multiples or quantities that are a result of multiplication.
• double – doppelt
• triple – dreifach
• quadruple – vierfach
• five times – fünfmal
• tenfold – zehnfach

Examples:

• Er hat doppelt so viel bezahlt. (He paid twice as much.)
• Die Gruppe besteht aus dreifachen Teams. (The group consists of triple teams.)
• Sie hat das Buch fünfmal gelesen. (She read the book five times.)

Special Numerals in German

1. Hundred and Thousand Prefixes
   When you combine numbers to form larger numbers, you often encounter specific rules for writing large numbers:
• Hunderte – hundreds
• Tausende – thousands

Examples:

• Hundertfünfzig (150)
• Zweitausend (2000)

Forming Larger Numbers

Larger numbers are usually formed by combining smaller numbers with hundert, tausend, Millionen, etc., separated by a "und" (and), except in a few cases.

Examples:

• 99 – neunundneunzig (ninety-nine)
• 1,000 – eintausend (one thousand)
• 15,000 – fünfzehntausend (fifteen thousand)
• 1,000,000 – eine Million (one million)

Cardinal Numbers in Sentences

1. Ich habe drei Katzen. (I have three cats.)
2. Wir brauchen hundert Stühle. (We need one hundred chairs.)
3. Er ist der fünfte Schüler. (He is the fifth student.)
4. Das Buch kostet zwanzig Euro. (The book costs twenty euros.)
5. Es gibt zwei Millionen Einwohner in der Stadt. (There are two million inhabitants in the city.)

Ordinal Numbers in Sentences

1. Dies ist mein erster Besuch hier. (This is my first visit here.)
2. Sie ist die zweite Person, die angekommen ist. (She is the second person who arrived.)
3. Der dritte Tag war der beste. (The third day was the best.)
4. Der fünfte Versuch war erfolgreich. (The fifth attempt was successful.)

Fractional Numbers in Sentences

1. Ich habe ein Drittel des Kuchens gegessen. (I ate one-third of the cake.)
2. Wir haben nur ein Zehntel des Projekts abgeschlossen. (We have completed only one-tenth of the project.)
3. Er trinkt ein Viertel des Glases. (He drinks a quarter of the glass.)

Multiplicative Numbers in Sentences

1. Das Auto fährt doppelt so schnell wie mein Fahrrad. (The car is twice as fast as my bike.)
2. Wir haben dreifache Punkte erreicht. (We reached triple points.)
3. Ich habe das Buch fünfmal gelesen. (I have read the book five times.)
