IELTS Modules Summary

The IELTS test has 4 modules:

1. Listening (30 minutes)

Format:

• 4 sections

• 40 questions

• Audio played only once

Question types:

• Multiple choice

• Form/Note/Table completion

• Map/Diagram labeling

• Sentence completion

Skills tested:

• Understanding main ideas

• Identifying details

• Following conversations

• Recognizing attitudes/opinions

2. Reading (60 minutes)

Academic:

• 3 long passages

• More complex vocabulary and ideas

General Training:

• Section 1: Short texts (ads, notices)

• Section 2: Work-related texts

• Section 3: Long passage (similar to Academic)

Question types (same for both):

• True/False/Not Given

• Matching headings

• Multiple choice

• Summary completion

• Sentence completion

• Diagram/Flow-chart completion

Skills tested:

• Skimming

• Scanning

• Understanding arguments

• Identifying the writer’s view

3. Writing (60 minutes)

Academic Writing:

• Task 1 (150 words): Describe a graph, chart, table, process, map.

• Task 2 (250 words): Essay (opinion, discussion, problem-solution, etc.)

General Training Writing:

• Task 1: Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, informal)

• Task 2: Essay (same as Academic)

Skills tested:

• Task response

• Coherence & cohesion

• Vocabulary

• Grammar & accuracy

4. Speaking (11–14 minutes)

Face-to-face interview with the examiner

Parts:

1. Introduction & general questions (4–5 mins)

   • About home, work, hobbies, family

2. Cue Card (2 mins)

   • 1 minute to prepare

   • 1–2 minutes speaking

3. Discussion (4–5 mins)

   • Abstract questions related to the Cue Card topic

• Fluency & coherence

• Pronunciation

• Vocabulary

• Grammar

Overall Test Duration:

📌 2 hours 45 minutes (Listening, Reading, Writing are continuous; Speaking may be same day or another day)
